In November, we took a much anticipated trip to Hangzhou to spend some time at the West Lake when our family came to stay. We loved every second of our visit, but for once, rather than bang on about how great it was with words, we thought we’d share some of our favourite photographs with you, so that you can appreciate the beauty for what it was.

Where to stay near Hangzhou West Lake?

So you want come and experience this beauty for yourself? We’d really recommend staying as close to the lake shore as you can afford. The problem, of course, is that most of the prime lake-side space is taken up by either luxury hotels, or those who don’t accept international guests. This makes it difficult to find somewhere to stay with a reasonable price tag that’s in a good location for exploring Hangzhou West Lake.

Thankfully, we found an excellent hotel right next to Hangzhou West Lake with a price tag that doesn’t break the bank!

Holiday Wuyang Hotel is- in a word- stunning. It’s about 30 seconds away from the lake shore so the location is perfect, and the interiors of the lobby, corridor and rooms are plush and luxurious. However, the Holiday Wuyang Hotel is far cheaper than any other high end hotel near the West Lake- the advertised price is £92 per night (expect to pay at least double this price anywhere else!) but you can frequently get a much discounted rate on Booking.com.

The hotel works hard to create a calming atmosphere akin to that of the West Lake. They play piano music throughout the public areas and we actually had a special moment in the corridor when I Giorni by Ludovico Einaudi started playing. It’s the song I walked down the aisle to at our wedding last summer, so it was an emotional surprise for us both to hear it again.

The plush decor and vibrant colours in our hotel room reminded me of jewels, and the whole style of the hotel did make me feel a bit like a royal. The bed was very cosy by Chinese standards, and we even had a bath which was a novelty and a delight.

Even breakfast was really good (so long as you don’t expect western style dishes) with plenty of fruit juices and hot buffet choices. We really lucked out with Holiday Wuyang Hotel, and would stay there again in a flash when we fancy a bit of a treat.
